Praise

“The best and most realistic historical novel about war I have ever read.”
–GENERAL H. NORMAN SCHWARZKOPF

“My favorite historical novel . . . A superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant.”
–JAMES M. MCPHERSON
Author of Battle Cry of Freedom

“Remarkable . . . A book that changed my life . . . I had never visited Gettysburg, knew almost nothing about that battle before I read the book, but here it all came alive.”
–KEN BURNS
Filmmaker, The Civil War

“Shaara carries [the reader] swiftly and dramatically to a climax as exciting as if it were being heard for the first time.”
–The Seattle Times

Author Essay

It’s hard to limit myself when talking about this book because it is simply one of the best books I’ve ever read.  But it wasn’t until the second reading that I appreciated this.  I read it in college, among the million other books an English major must read, and I liked it.  Then, when we published Gods and Generals, I figured I’d read Killer Angels again, just to refresh my memory.  And it was if I’d never read it before. Names and places that had simply been history before now took on new meaning and importance. It gave me a whole new understanding of the Civil War and the why’s of it all.  Killer Angels is simply a book that everyone should read.

In a quiet, deliberate, understated fashion, Michael Shaara paints a picture of the military leaders at the Battle of Gettysburg.  I learned of the leaders, both flawed and good, and how they dealt with the weight of sending men into what is considered the pivotal battle of the civil war.  This is the book that inspired Ken Burns to create his award-winning documentary THE CIVIL WAR and now that I’ve read it, I understand why.
