Author Q&A

Dear Reader,

I’m delighted to be able to share some of my thoughts about Bonds of Justice with you.

Max Shannon, the hero of this book, intrigued me from his first appearance in Mine to Possess. I wanted to see beneath the surface of this driven human detective with the solid core of honor, learn the layers of the man he was. I did exactly that in Bonds of Justice and what I found was a fascinating male with a razor-sharp intelligence…and the most painful of secrets.

Max’s heroine, Sophia Russo, has her own share of secrets. She knows very well that she is broken on a fundamental level—all Justice Psy eventually end up in that place, their minds unable to take the strain of the horrors they’re asked to see each and every day as they scan the twisted memories of the world’s most vicious criminals. As a result, Sophia is a heroine unlike any other, one who is quite capable of delivering the most lethal justice.

Because of who Max and Sophia are, the work they do, there is darkness in this book—but it’s leavened with joy. Max might be human, but he knows how to play as well as any changeling. And Sophia is more than able to hold her own against a man who makes her want to break every rule, take impossible chances…even when she knows she’s racing an inexorable countdown, for the bleak fact is that there is no “out” for a J.

Those of you who’ve been reading the series since the first book will know that there has been a continuing story arc—with Bonds of Justice, you begin to see pieces of the end-game, all of it intertwined with the story of Max’s and Sophia’s relationship. Witnessing the spark between these two grow into something so much deeper, so much more powerful, was a wonderful writing journey for me. And as always, returning to the Psy/Changeling world was pure pleasure.

I feel as if I know each and every character in the world intimately. I love being able to see them developing from book to book. With Bonds of Justice being set mainly in San Francisco, I was able to get an update on the DarkRiver leopards as well, including on Lucas’s and Sascha’s news.

I hope you enjoy returning to the Psy/Changeling world, too. But most of all, I hope you enjoy falling in love with Max and his Sophia.

All my very best,
Nalini
