Author Essay

Dear Reader,

When the Morganville Vampires series started in 2006, I had no idea it would reach so many people, or that it would stretch to an amazing fifteen books. I’m humbled and honored by the continued enthusiasm of readers for these stories—I get letters and emails from all over the world, and it seems astonishing, still, that a story about a dusty little West Texas town could touch so many people.

I thank you, dear readers, for giving me so much opportunity and challenge and joy. Without you, none of it would be possible. I appreciate each and every one of you, so much.

So it’s with both excitement and sadness that I celebrate the release of Daylighters, the fifteenth (and last) Morganville Vampires novel. I’ve lived in Morganville in my head for so many years now that it seems odd to move to something else, but I know it’s the right thing to do, and the right time to do it.

That doesn’t mean I won’t come back to play in Morganville again, but let’s call it…a vacation. I’ll be back, and I hope you will too…short stories for certain, coming to you in 2014.

After all, Morganville doesn’t just let you leave, does it?

Yeah. That’s what I thought.

Rachel Caine
