Author Essay

"I’ve always thought that people wrote non-fiction books because they believed that there wasn’t a book like the one they were proposing to write–and, of course, that there was a good reason for such a book’s existence. I have spent the last twenty years writing books about the sea, and in the process, I have looked at tens of thousands of reference works. While it was fun, it was also inconvenient, because it involved some combination of travel, libraries, bookstores, magazines, scientific publications, movies, television programs, and most recently, on-line searches. After years of research in all of these locations, I have reduced a vast amount of information to what I hope is a concise and readable format. I illustrated many of the living (and some of the extinct) creatures of the sea, but I didn’t include pictures of those things that I didn’t think would be enhanced by an illustration (islands, oil spills, currents, features of the sea floor, sea battles, etc.). In other words, I did all this work so you wouldn’t have to." — Richard Ellis
