Gr 1-3– In a new addition to the “Pet Rescue Adventures” series, Avery is on a vacation with her family and they are staying in a house right by the river. Between all the fun activities they have planned, she finds a dog who appears hungry and alone and names her Hazel. She is afraid that if she tells her parents, they will make her find the owner. She wants more time with the puppy, so she feeds her in secret. Hazel’s point of view is also briefly shared a few times, and readers learn that she was separated from her mom, abandoned by the river, and is very hungry. Readers will cruise through the story, hoping Avery and her family will rescue Hazel and take her home. The sketchlike illustrations bring life to the text. This is a short and sweet read about a girl who wants a puppy and a dog who wants a home. VERDICT A wonderful addition to any collection, especially where the series is already popular.–School Library Journal
