Author Essay

Dear Reader:

I love complex books and I love layering plots and subplots together to form a rich, vibrant world. Throughout writing the “Otherworld” series, my canvas has grown large and colorful and it continues to expand with each book.

But the world of the “Indigo Court” series is still new. It started with a dream. I was sleeping one night, and in my dream, I saw a vivid painting. In the painting a woman walked through a magical woodland filled with creatures out of legend and lore. The woman was searching for her aunt, who had been caught by the wintery spider queen who loomed over the forest like a dark shadow. And every where the woman looked, there was danger.

When I woke up, the vision stayed with me. I wrote it down, as I do with all haunting thoughts that I can’t shake. And eventually, I got a contract to write the vision into a series of books. As I began writing the first book—Night Myst—the world began to take form, and in Night Veil—the second book—it has blossomed out and is still growing.

The woman in the woodland became Cicely Waters, a wind witch who discovers she is also one of the Cambyra Fae—the shifting Fae, a lineage that is both a gift and a curse. And I discovered the woodland is called the Golden Wood and it belongs to Lainule—the Queen of Rivers and Rushes, the embodiment of Summer. But it’s been taken over by the looming spidery queen named Myst—the mother of the Vampiric Fae, a dark hybrid between the true vampires and the Winter Court.

The Indigo Court world is parallel to our own, similar and yet a step away from our reality. It’s a world of intrigue, of allies and liaisons, of passion and romance, of hedonism and desires—both returned and unwelcome.

In this world, vampires are predators, at the top of the food chain, but they can be reasoned with as long as you acknowledge they’re in control. And the vampires are in a centuries-old war with their ancient enemy—the Indigo Court.

The war hinges on the backs of Cicely and her soulmate—Grieve, the Fae Prince of the Summer Court. Grieve has been captured and turned by Myst. He fights against the monster he fears he’s becoming, even as Cicely struggles to free him.

Every aspect of this world has its own magical energy. Even the humans—the yummanii—possess their own special powers. As I delved further into the writing, it became apparent the entire Indigo Court world is sentient, from the beautiful and deadly snow spiders, to the trees of the Golden Wood, to the elementals that wander the forests and the wind.

I love writing this world—it’s like plunging into a dark, visceral Wonderland where the wind carries secrets, where true love struggles against the dark forces of the earth, and where Summer and Winter are engaged in an eternal battle. In the world of the Indigo Court, your enemies may just turn out to be your allies, even though you desperately want to be free of them. Here, is a world where a small group of rag-tag friends band together, vowing to free the world from the Winter Queen’s grasp and return Summer to her proper throne.

I hope you enjoy Night Veil, and I invite you to check out my website, and contact me on Twitter and Facebook.

Bright Blessings,

Yasmine Galenorn
