Author Essay

Dear Reader—

I’ve always had a thing for Knights in Shining Armor. I guess I’m just fascinated by shiny metal—not to mention the intriguing hunks inside it. Makes a girl wish for a really big can opener.

Which is what made Master of Shadows so much fun to write.

Since I started writing my vampire paranormal series, “The Mageverse”, in 2004, I’ve penned books about Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad, and Sir Gawain, among others. King Arthur, Guinevere, Morgana and even Merlin also made frequent appearances in my books too.

And then there’s Tristan, co-star of one of the greatest romantic tragedies in history, But instead of pairing my immortal vampire knight with his legendary partner, Isolde, I decided it would be more fun to turn their romance on its head.

In my version of the story, Tristan and Isolde aren’t adulterous lovers cuckolding Tristan’s uncle, King Mark of Cornwall. It turns out their story has been distorted by centuries of legends until even Tristan no longer recognized it.

In fact, he and Isolde had been married for years when the wizard Merlin tested them and the other knights and ladies of Camelot 1500 years ago.

Tristan passed the test, and won the right to become one of Merlin’s new vampire champions. However, Isolde failed Merlin’s trial and was judged unfit to drink from the wizard’s Grail, which would have made her an immortal witch with incredible power. Tristan, driven by his loyalty to King Arthur, decided to become a vampire in order to fight beside his leader, even though his wife remained mortal.

Outraged, Isolde retaliated by becoming a traitor. She joined the rebellion led by Arthur’s bastard son Mordred, who had also failed Merlin’s test. The tragedy that resulted has haunted Tristan for fifteen centuries.

Which brings me to the events of Master of Shadows. La Belle Coeur, a beautiful witch, becomes Tristan’s partner in the battle against Warlock, an insane werewolf wizard determined to trigger a war between his people and the Magekind. Belle has spent centuries seducing potential agents and transforming them into vampires, and she reminds him far too much of his seductive, dangerous wife.

For her part, Belle considers Tristan an arrogant pain in the magic wand, and she wants nothing to do with him. Even so, sexual tension boils between Belle and Tristan as they battle Warlock to prevent the war that could destroy them all, werewolves and Magekind alike.

I had a great time writing Master of Shadows, and I hope my readers find it as much fun as I did. For excerpts, desktop wallpaper, and other goodies, check out my website at
