Rachel Harrison quickly became one of my favorite authors with her debut, The Return, but it’s her third novel, Such Sharp Teeth, that I find myself recommending to everyone looking for something new in horror. The narrator, Rory, reluctantly returns home to support her pregnant sister and encounters more than just bad memories in her hometown after she is attacked by a large animal on the road one night. Equal parts terrifying and darkly comedic, Such Sharp Teeth is as much a story about a woman embracing her feral side as it is a traditional werewolf tale.

Hearts Still Beating

I spend a lot of time reading young adult titles for work and I’d be remiss in not including a YA book dear to my heart (pun absolutely intended). Hearts Still Beating brilliantly combines a post-apocalyptic story with a sapphic romance. It’s such a thrilling book with heartfelt characters and relationships and I will never NOT be thinking about Mara and Rory. If you love The Last of Us, this one is for you.
