“A Year of Granny Squares” by Kylie Moleta is a delightful crochet book that offers a unique and inspiring journey through the world of granny squares. With 52 different granny square patterns, one for each week of the year, this book provides an abundance of creative possibilities. Kylie Moleta is well-known for her beautiful granny square blankets, and I’ve been a big admirer of her designs for several years. Any crocheter looking for some fresh inspiration to expand their granny square repertoire will find “A Year of Granny Squares” to be an invaluable addition to their library. The variety of squares, techniques, and projects provides far more than a year’s worth of wonderful ideas to try. Kylie has designed a collection that both inspires and delights, and can be referred to and enjoyed for years to come.
BOOKLIST STARRED REVIEW
Spring, summer, winter, and fall: Moleta has a granny square for every season and every week of the year in this fun, new book. Colors and patterns of the grannies vary by the season, with bright yellows and blues representing summer, and autumnal colors of brown, orange, and mustard following after. Intermixed within each season are projects for different skill sets. Both a written pattern and a crochet chart are included as well as a full-color picture. Each granny is the same size, six by six inches, making it easy for the crocheter to mix and match them to suit the project they have in mind. For those crocheters who need inspiration on how to combine their grannies, four seasonal projects are included: a lightweight blanket for spring, a cheerful bag for summer, a shawl for fall, and a cozy cushion for the cold winter. Scattered throughout are suggestions for which grannies work best together and how to combine them for a larger project. Granny squares are perpetually popular. and granny enthusiasts are always looking for unique takes on the traditional square. This book will more than satisfy them and is highly recommended for all public libraries.
