Preti Taneja

Preti Taneja is the author of We That Are Young, an epic adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear set in contemporary India and Kashmir. She won the 2018 Desmond Elliott Prize for the finest literary debut novel of the year, and was nominated for numerous international awards, including the Folio Prize, India’s Shakti Bhatt First Novel Prize, and Europe’s most prestigious award for a work of world literature, the Prix Jan Michalski. We That Are Young was also a New York Public Library pick, and appeared on multiple end-of-year ‘best of’ lists. It is also published in India and in translation around the world. Her second book is Aftermath, a non fiction lament about terror, trauma and grief following the UK London Bridge attack in 2019. Aftermath won the Gordon Burn Prize for literature that is ‘fearless in ambition and execution’ and was a New Yorker Book of the Year. In 2022 Preti was awarded the prestigious Philip Leverhulme Prize in Languages and Literatures for her groundbreaking experimental work.
