Author Essay

Dear Readers,
What is it about small towns that are so appealing? For me, I understand the attraction because I live in a small town, which is why I wanted to set a series in one. My Hope series is set in a fictional small town in northeastern Oklahoma. And while Hope isn’t an exact replica of the town I live in, there are bits and pieces of my home base in Hope, along with other places I’ve lived or visited and fallen in love with.
One of the things I love most about small towns is the camaraderie of the people who inhabit them. When they say everyone knows you, it’s mostly true. You can walk into your local grocery store and run into people you know, or walk down Main Street and wave to folks you’ve known your entire life. There’s something incredibly warming about having that sense of family, friendship and familiarity in the place you call home. That’s what I wanted for my Hope series and for the characters that live there.
The people who live in the town of Hope are people who’ve grown up together, gone to school together, who have lifelong ties of friendship. Some are family members, and no matter what has separated them over the years, they’ve always come back together. There’s a bond that can’t be broken, and they will always be there in a time of need.
Love After All is book four of the Hope series, and centers on Sebastian “Bash” Palmer, owner of the local bar. As a bartender, Bash hears all the stories. He’s the one people come to when they need someone to talk to. A lifelong resident of Hope, Bash knows almost everyone in town. He has a lot of friends, and has seen many of those friends fall in love and make lifelong commitments. It makes him happy to see his friends settled, but he’s not ready to follow in their footsteps. He tried the marriage thing once, with disastrous results. He doesn’t intend to do it again.
What he does notice, though, is high school math teacher Chelsea Gardner, a woman who’s been on his radar for a while. He and Chelsea have known each other a long time, and there’s been no romantic connection between them until recently. Chelsea has dated a lot of men, but no one she’s found to settle down with. She’s determined to find the right one this time, so she’s developed a list of qualities she thinks will help land her the perfect man.
Bash thinks her list is ridiculous, and doesn’t believe you can find the person of your dreams that way, so he tells her he’ll help her land the right man. But the more time the two of them spend together, the more the sparks fly between them. And suddenly, Bash doesn’t want to find anyone else for Chelsea, because he wants her for himself.
But Bash doesn’t tick off any items on Chelsea’s list, so she knows he isn’t the right man for her. Or is he? Because as we all know, sometimes what we think we want isn’t at all what we really need.
Add in one adorable Chihuahua named Lou, a lot of laughs, a smoking hot couple, and you have Love After All. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing Bash and Chelsea’s love story.
Happy reading.
