He fears his people will lose themselves in the attempt, and so he sets out in search of their salvation beyond the Dark Ember.

Elsewhere in the Dark Ember, there is a young dragon chained in human form: Starling. She and her motley crew of exiles are about to lose their freedom. These two unlikely allies could be the solution to each other’s crisis. In their quest for independence, Dusk and Starling face dangerous negotiations, poisoned politics, and the destructive echo of a dead god.
