Every year, millions of people move to a new country. Migrants constantly reshape their places of origin and arrival, and in today’s climate it is more important than ever to advocate for their rights around the globe. Join Penguin Classics in sharing the #migrationstories that have shaped your life, and spread the message that the story of global migration is a story we are all part of. Below you will also find links to organizations that support migrant relief efforts. If you’re able, we encourage you to donate.
- International Rescue Committee (IRC) – responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future.
- Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) – provides high quality, free legal representation to children who enter the immigration system alone, as well as continued support through medical and social services.
- The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) – The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project is a project of the Urban Justice Center, this organization helps prevent wrongful deportations and is currently looking for donations to provide legal aid, as well as volunteer attorneys and translators.
- The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Educational and Legal Services (RAICES) – promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to immigrant children, refugees and families in Texas.
- The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights – The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights advocates for separated children and is trying to launch a new initiative specifically centered around children affected by the zero-tolerance policy.
The idea for #migrationstories was born out of the excitement around the publication of THE PENGUIN BOOK OF MIGRATION LITERATURE, a global anthology that gives readers an understanding of our rapidly changing world, through the eyes of those at the center of that change. Featuring works by Mohsin Hamid, Zadie Smith, Marjane Satrapi, Salman Rushdie, and Warsan Shire, with a foreword by Edwidge Danticat, Â this selection of works brings together the most compelling literary depictions of migration.
