The Way It Works is a behind-the-scenes look at how things really work in Ottawa. From the problems of Opposition to the challenges of choosing a cabinet, from domestic policy-making to reacting to international crises, Eddie Goldenberg reveals all.
He recounts almost minute by minute what went on during the morning he spent with the prime minister at 24 Sussex Drive on September 11, 2001, and describes in fascinating detail the difficult decade he spent as the bridge between Jean Chrétien and his ambitious finance minister, Paul Martin. His account of the tense Quebec referendum of 1995 and its aftermath gives us new insight into Stéphane Dion, whom he clearly admires.
This is the real world of Canadian politics and government, complete with all the secrets that your political science textbook never mentioned. Wise and witty, The Way It Works is vital reading for every informed Canadian.
