“Kylie Griffin has me hooked.”

Author Essay

Dear Readers,

It’s been an exciting ride launching my “Light Blade” series back in February this year with Vengeance Born(Bk#1), and your responses have been amazing! So many of you have sent emails to let me know you couldn’t wait for Alliance Forged (Bk#2).

Well, the wait is over! Varian and Kymora’s story is here for your reading pleasure, and what a way to start with another great cover from cover wizard—Gene Mollica! Yes, that’s Varian on the front and he’d garnered quite a lot of interest, mostly from those of the female persuasion :-).

For those who don’t know Varian, we met him in Vengeance Born. He belongs to a race of people called the Na’Chi—a half human, half demon hybrid species. Not only is he the leader of a rag-tag bunch of outcasts but he’s also a warrior. Being part demon he’s inherited their incredible strength and enhanced senses and as he’s of mixed blood these traits are augmented during battle.

The Gift (as his skill is known) has kept him and the rest of the Na’Chi safe from the Na’Reish demons who consider them a bloodborn disgrace and would see them all dead. Imagine having such abilities. Who wouldn’t want to experience such incredible power and prowess in battle?

Should I reveal now that Varian actually fears his Na’Reish heritage? For him, having such a Gift is a double-edged sword—letting his Na’Reish side loose leaves him open to battle-rush, an insatiable hunger to take a life, the thrill of the kill. That addiction could one day overwhelm him and turn him into a mindless beast who is unable to tell friend from foe. And having spent most of his life honing his Gift, Varian is finding it harder and harder to harness that side of him.

Does he lose control? Yes. Does he hurt anyone? Yes! More importantly, does he manage to conquer the beast? Well, that’s something you’re going to have to find out for yourself when you read Alliance Forged! 😉

Back to Varian. If you look really closely at his eyes you might notice they’re a violet color. There are flecks within the violet that change color with the moods and emotions they’re feeling. This is a special feature of the Na’Chi, and one way to tell them apart from a Na’Reish demon.

Being a warrior-type, Varian gives new meaning to the words stoic and reserved, he keeps his emotions and thoughts pretty much to himself. Changing eye colors should come in handy for Kymora, our heroine in Alliance Forged, to discover what he’s feeling, right?

Weeeeellllll … no. She’s blind. But, like Varian, she has a Gift. She has the ability to read auras and through that their emotions, and the accuracy of her readings increase if she’s able to make skin to skin contact. It made for some interesting scenes between them, especially once Varian found out about her Gift!

Together Varian and Kymora try to navigate the dangerous path of melding two races, to forge an alliance against the much stronger Na’Reish—the demons who would see the humans enslaved and the Na’Chiexterminated. But human rebels who oppose the move hamper their efforts.

Varian fears the humans will never be able to put aside their mixed blood prejudice, a belief that’s reinforced as he struggles to control his darker half-demon personality, while in her role as high priestess, and armed with the truth, Kymora fights to unite their two races and help Varian to accept his dual nature.

Readers, I hope you enjoy Bk # 2 of the Light Blade series!
