In 2011, I decided I was going to become a runner. I started going for training runs of two and three miles, and they were great. Three mile runes gave way to four mile runs. The scenery flew by, pedestrians obligingly stepped aside when they heard my footsteps, birds chirped specifically to cheer me along as I ran. I was going to be the next Joan Benoit. No, the next Usain Bolt! But a Usain Bolt who also runs marathons.
Then, as has happened to every distance runner ever, I got injured. Feeling betrayed by my legs, I went to a physical therapist, who told me all about patellofemoral pain syndrome, which is so common among runners that it’s widely known as “runner’s knee”. A few months of physical therapy, foam rolling, and lots of stationary biking later, I was back to gingerly jogging a few miles a week.
How different that story would have been if I’d had The New Rules of Running in hand! I’d have known to increase my long run mileage by no more than 10% per week, to run slow on those long runs rather than trying to hold my race pace, and to use a foam roller to dispel tension in overworked muscles; I’d have varied the tempo and intensity of workouts to give my joints a break, figured out the best running shoes for my particular gait, and learned how to master the taper and chase away taper crazies. I’d have known which flavor Gu I liked! (note: none.). Thankfully, now I have this book, and — several marathons later– am back on track (no pun intended) to becoming the next Usain Bolt.
Buy this book. Train with it. Learn how to self-diagnose common running injuries, and why rest is always the best cure. Decide which pre- and post- run nutrition and stretches are best for you. Most of all, rest assured that you will know best how your body needs to train.
