When a disgraced journalist is accused of murdering a Manhattan socialite, cab driver Siriwathi Perera is drawn into the shadows of the city to uncover the truth in this twisty new mystery by Yosha Gunasekera.
Working as both a cab driver and a part-time investigator, Siri encounters the best and worst of what New York City has to offer while dodging traffic and digging into her clients’ cases. It has made her mostly unflappable—until she dives into her newest case that she and public defender Amaya Fernando are working together. Her client, Lucy Chapman, a once-promising writer, has been accused of stalking Addison Larsen, a Manhattan socialite. What at first seems like a run-of-the mill case turns deadly when Lucy becomes the prime suspect in Addison’s murder.
With just days until Lucy’s indictment, Siri and Amaya race to chase leads. As they dig deeper into not only Addison’s messy past, but also the city’s, they’re pulled into the hidden world beneath Manhattan, uncovering forgotten tunnels, abandoned subway stations, and buried secrets that stretch back hundreds of years.
As they hunt for answers, Siri finds herself questioning who she can trust, what justice really means, and whether she’s ready to stop running from the life she’d always thought was out of reach.
