Two masked men burst into a ward in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barnstaple. While a nurse is held at gunpoint, a patient is shot three times as he lies helpless after a stroke. The men vanish as quickly as they arrived, leaving the witnesses in shock. Luckily, the quick thinking of staff manages to save the victim’s life.

For DI Jan Talantire, the crime is baffling. She isn’t able to immediately identify the perpetrators and there is no obvious reason why the victim was targeted. He was a respected mid-fifties solicitor, a pillar of the community.

As Talantire’s detective team dig for clues, they discover eighteen current patients have a criminal record. Was this a case of mistaken identity, the bullets intended for one of them? And if so, Talantire must find out who the real intended victim is – before the assailants realise their mistake and return.
