Following the success of Mirafiori, Jabois returns with his “impeccable literary flair” (Babelia) and the unsettling story of a mother and son, a journey into the heart of the most complex institution of all: the family.
“Between a toy gun and a real one, the difference is the bullet. Only by pulling the trigger can the truth be known. And the same, thought Amalia Constenla, goes for so many things in life.”
Amalia turns sixty-five on December 31. But today is still the eve. She locks herself in the house to prepare food for the family while making sure everything sparkles for the big day. Outside, police and journalists have taken over the town because of an event that has paralyzed the country for twenty-four hours.
In this unsettling story that takes place over a single day, an unforgettable protagonist, Amalia Constenla, pushes moral boundaries and draws the reader into a journey of sacrifice, redemption, and guilt. Manuel Jabois constructs, around a mother and her son, an uncomfortable inquiry into the origin and destiny of the first institution of all: the family.
“It had cost a fortune. But they were a family. Sometimes things happened, other times they didn’t, just like in every family. And if things happened, they worked it out, just like in every family. They were a family like any other. Families love and care for and protect one another and never ask each other anything, ever, and that’s what all families do—or should do. Theirs, certainly.”
