Roberto Ampuero’s return to nonfiction with a personal and political account written from the corridors of power, where the decisions that shape a country’s course are made.
“I then recalled Mario Vargas Llosa’s warning about politics during a dinner at President Piñera’s home: “That is where the basest human passions reign, and that is where you will see things worse than the worst you can imagine.””
Following the success of Nuestros años verde olivo and Detrás del muro, Roberto Ampuero returns to nonfiction with a book that is as personal as it is political. These pages do not seek the neutrality of a retrospective diplomatic assessment nor the cold tone of an official memorandum: they are the first-person testimony of a writer who was at the center of power during a period of global upheaval.
Ampuero recounts his time at the Foreign Ministry during Sebastián Piñera’s second administration from the inside and without intermediaries. From the official visit to Donald Trump at the White House to the tense day in Cúcuta, from the controversial tour of China to conversations raising compelling strategic questions, the author reconstructs key episodes of recent Chilean diplomacy with a sharp memory and a narrative flair.
More than a travelogue or a succession of political milestones, Between the Pen and Politics is a reflection on the exercise of power, the tensions between principles and pragmatism, and the rapid reconfiguration of the world order. Ampuero observes how the rules of the international game are changing and what place a country like Chile should occupy in that scenario. A testimony that brings the reality of the diplomatic world closer to the public, who can only imagine it, as they live far removed from it.
