In August 1914, World War I reaches Africa when Germany attacks the outpost at Madziwa, a border village on the Rovuma River in Mozambique. Its waters, contested by the German and Portuguese armies, become the scene of a mysterious episode: the spread of a strange disease that begins to affect only the colonizers and robs them of their ability to read and write. Soon, none of the invaders can make sense of the world through writing, and books, reports, documents, photographs, and maps seem faded to them.
Threatened by German might and subjugated by Portuguese colonization, the peoples of Mozambique find refuge in that which cannot be erased: ancestral knowledge passed down orally. But how will Westerners respond to this reversal of roles? With the tenderness and originality that characterize Mia Couto, The River of Blindness offers a keen insight into memory, culture, and the human capacity to face adversity with hope.
