However, the plot also questions that literary heritage in the light of modern sensibility. The result is a novel that is both classic and renewing, in which the clash between society’s expectations and personal desires is pointed out, and themes such as women’s suffrage, the transience of experience and the possibility of achieving egalitarian relationships are explored.
