“I am a historian of souls […]. On the one hand, I study a specific person who lived in a specific time and took part in specific events; on the other, I try to discern within that person the eternal human being—the vibration of eternity, the part that remains unchanged.”
These words by Svetlana Alexievich sum up the literary project that defines her entire body of work: a project shaped by sensitivity and by the courage to give voice to anonymous lives. This volume brings together an excerpt from The Unwomanly Face of War and another from Voices from Chernobyl, two of her most representative books, in which she masterfully creates a moving, heartrending chorus from oral testimonies that turn history toward the intimate. Through these voices, human suffering finds a language capable of revealing what can only be understood through lived experience. This way of telling history has made her work one of the most distinctive of our time and earned her the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2015.
