In the small village of Amun lives a poor boy named Theo. Theo adores books, but because of his pointed ears and impoverished life, he isn’t allowed to use the village library. As he endures the prejudice and hatred of the village, he dreams of going where such things don’t exist: Aftzaak, City of Books. But one day, Theo chances to meet a Kafna–a librarian who works for the great library of Aftzaak–and his life changes forever…

Peace in Peril
95 years have passed since the Palena Conference put an end to the Great War of the Races, but with the old heroes retiring, the land stands at a moment of truth. Theo and Tei are both candidates for Magus of the Library, a key figure in preserving the peace between peoples, but Tei refuses to allow others close to her for fear of her mana harming them, and Theo can’t even seem to keep things civil between him and Medina…

Theo’s Fight to Be a Kafna

Theo has passed the exam to become a kafna and has begun his apprenticeship in the great library of Aftzaak. Kind and talented, Theo is friendly to everyone. Yet, one of his classmates, Aya Guunjoh, regards him as her enemy, for reasons unbeknownst to all but her. Will Theo’s love of books and innate genius be enough for him to overcome this challenge?

A Student Among Masters

Theo has returned to Aftzaak, the magisterial City of Books. Passing the exams to become a kafna was hard enough. Now he has to compete against his fellow trainees–fighters and geniuses one and all–to prove that he has what it takes to achieve his dreams and ascend to the Central Library’s elite. Under the watchful eyes of his wise seniors and teachers, including his youthful mentor Sedona, Theo begins to awaken to the sublime fate and impossible challenges that history has prepared for him…

Group Admission

Theo has completed the first part of the grueling exam to become a kafna, but he’s not in the clear yet–there are two more trials he must face. Even if he makes it through the second test, an intense face-to-face oral examination, the last challenge is a practical demonstration of his abilities as a librarian. Theo has been studying his whole life for this moment, but there’s one kind of test that no amount of studying could have prepared him for: a group project.

Ambition Tested

Theo has set out from his hometown on a journey to the great city of Aftzaak with three goals: to see the city he’s longed for his whole life, to take the test to become a Kafna, and to return the book lent to him by Sedona seven years earlier–the book that changed his life. The journey is difficult and the road long, but the world is filled with things for a young scholar like Theo to learn. Yet no matter how prepared he feels, the test that awaits Theo in Aftzaak is unlike anything he’s faced before…
