Author Essay

Our first child was adopted because we were sidetracked to go to Saint John instead of moving to Toronto. And by that time both of us had given up on the idea of ever having children. We were on our way to Toronto, and drove to Saint John to say goodbye to my brother and nieces, when my brother suddenly convinced us to buy a house in Saint John.
We did this because we were at loose ends, with no thought of having a fixed place to stay. Most of our lives we have had no fixed place. But it was because of this sudden and seemingly impulsive decision that gave us our own house that we were able to adopt our first child, which we would never have done if we had phoned to say goodbye as we had intended, instead of driving down.
We were in Saint John only four or five months when a phone call came out of nowhere one day, and suddenly our first child came into our life.
We are far from perfect parents. But I will guarantee my friend this—there were no other parents in the world our first child was meant to have. And, mistakes aside, no one could love him even an eighth as much as we do, ever at all!
I suppose our second child is even more proof that this condition, where we do not know, and cannot decide, is a true and absolute condition that implores us to rely on faith, even if it is so often in hindsight.
