Author Essay

One night, about 10 pm, I was getting ready for bed (I had to get up at 5 am to go to work the next day), and my husband called up the stairs to me in a hushed voice that Arthur Clarke was on the phone.  Well, of course I took the call.  Afterward, my husband told me that when he’d picked up the phone, he’d been a bit brusque, annoyed that someone might be calling that late; he’d demanded "And who may I tell her is calling?"  And Arthur, who is one of the most charming people I’ve had the pleasure to meet, replied, "Just tell her it’s a starving young author from Sri Lanka."  Well, my husband, who is not much of a science fiction reader but read everything by Clarke and loved it, was absolutely thrilled.  "I can’t believe I actually talked to Arthur Clarke!" he kept saying.  And I had to forgive Arthur for calling so late after that!  Anyway, we still had questions to answer for the 3001 manuscript, so it was worth it.
