From the “always fabulous Lauren Dane”* comes her new novel of a treacherous family legacy, a temptation just as dangerous, and an evil so depraved it can only be spoken of in whispers…
The life of Lark Jaansen, hunter in Clan Gennessee, has been shaped by violence and unrest—and it defines her future. Well-trained and resilient, she’s met her militaristic match in Simon Leviathan, a warrior not of this world. Locked in mutual admiration, and a desire so hot it burns, Lark and Simon have something else in common: they love the dark, and as a shadow is cast over their world, they’re each coming into their own.
A mysterious war has been waged among the Others. As witches and humans turn against each other, as faes retreat in fear, and as vampires rise, Lark and Simon discover that an unseen force is behind it. A single, hungry entity older than recorded history has returned to gorge on the magick of his victims. He is the Magister, nothing less than the end of time. Finding him is Lark and Simon’s first hope. Surviving him is their last.*Lara Adrian
As a stay-at-home mom, Lauren Dane had lots of conversations in a singsong voice but no real outlet for adult thoughts and words. Armed with a secondhand laptop, she decided to “give that writing thing a serious go.” Nearly a decade… More about Lauren Dane
"[A] witchy new series." — Lara Adrian, New York Times bestselling author
I’m so thrilled to be writing this note to you to introduce Chaos Burning, the second in my “Bound By Magick” series.
In Heart of Darkness I welcomed you to the world of Clan witches with Meriel Owen and the rest of the Owen Clan. They were faced with the growing threat of mages and turned witches who were out to steal their magick in any way necessary.
But now with Chaos Burning we’re turning a darker corner in this world. It’s more than turned witches and mages. More than the heated discussion as to whether witches should finally come out to humans officially. There’s a bigger, scarier and far more ancient threat on the horizon, The Magister—a being who is the stuff of nightmares and stories told to children to keep them in line.
Simon Leviathan is a Lycian. He’s a prince in his own world, but in ours he’s still one major alpha wolf and he’s amused by and admiring of Lark Jaansen, the blue haired warrior witch who’s come to Seattle to help Clan Owen out. And slowly the friendship develops and strengthens and the two realize they can count on the other in increasingly dangerous times.
And from friendship, Simon realizes there’s something else. Something he can’t defend against because Lark has already gotten past his normal defenses and he can’t not care for her deeply. He can’t stop himself from loving her and once he decides that, well, he’s an alpha male after all. He wants her and he’s not going to stop until she’s his. Good thing Lark is just as strong because she can’t find much of a reason to deny her own feelings for him right back.
This boogeyman of a being that’s rarely even spoken of and usually in whispers and vague stories is real and threatens all of existence. How can you fight something no one really understands much less knows how to defeat? Each new thing they discover is more dire. The Fae begin to close the way to Tir na nOg. The Vampires send their protected humans away and the shifters send their most vulnerable into hiding.
Though this new love in her life buoys Lark, the ever rising dark seems insurmountable and unstoppable. Lark and Simon seek all the help they can get, traveling to Lycia for support and information as the witches and Others from all across the world work nonstop to find a weakness, a way to defeat The Magister—even as Others begin to disappear in greater numbers than before. Even as the disappearances hit very close to home.
The price paid by Owen and the Others is high in Chaos Burning and things continue to fracture as we head into Going Under. I hope you’ll all trust me to get you through the rising darkness in the coming days.
