I’ve always believed in magic. Don’t we all, to some degree, if we love to read paranormal romance and urban fantasy? Part of me is convinced there is true magic out there, a world made of spells and humans with special gifts that exists just beneath our own. It’s that belief that inspired me to write Liquid Lies, the first paranormal romance in my new series, “The Elementals”.
The Ofarians own the element of water. They wield it, they worship it, they become one with it. Hiding in plain sight in modern-day San Francisco, they preside over an international business empire whose secretive product supports the entire race and keeps them separate from the human world. The threat of exposure controls all their actions, and it’s the main thread running throughout the series.
When I wrote this novel, I had just left a long-standing office job. The business world is filled with people wanting to climb to the very top, believing that once they get there, their lives will be complete and all will be well and easy. But I kept thinking: what happens when someone reaches the highest levels of success, and what she presides over isn’t just not what she expected, it’s downright evil?
In Liquid Lies, I named that someone Gwen. I gave her confidence and intelligence and drive, the once-in-a-generation gift of being able to instantly learn any language, a handsome, loyal bodyguard chosen by her elders to be her husband—and then had a kidnapper take it all away.
Reed, a human ignorant of magic, thinks this kidnapping job is just like any other—prosperous, dangerous, exhilarating. On the outside he appears to have his life figured out, that he’s comfortable in his skin and has accepted the lonely, circuitous nature of his days. But his beautiful new target not only ignites his desire, but makes him question his choices and his future.
I’m fascinated by the kidnapper/kidnapped dynamic, and I used Liquid Lies to explore what extremes might make either person change their minds…or change sides. Is sex power or a weakness? Does the existence of magic make things easier or more difficult? Who can, or should, you trust?
Welcome to my Elemental world. It’s your world, too. To find its magic, you just have to know where to look. I’m so glad you’re here.
