“The whimsical, candy-colored illustrations are charming; Kordesh’s depictions of Marlon’s antics and larger-than-life personality will certainly elicit smiles.”—Kirkus

“Soft-toned ink, gouache, and watercolor illustrations give the whole undersea world a sherbet bright warmth, and the animal-fish cast members radiate distinct personalities through small, expressive details.”—Publishers Weekly

“Imaginatively fun and humorous characters present a moral story about the benefits of letting others shine instead of hogging the spotlight.”—School Library Journal

“Kordesh’s ink, gouache, and watercolor illustrations in soft pastel colors create a silly world where recognizable sea creatures go to school alongside mer-farm animals, all under the care of a lovingly frustrated mercow teacher. There are moments that will make readers giggle aloud, such as Marlon’s annoyed side-eye glares and crisp frown when he is wiggling in his disappointing seaweed costume. Spotlight-loving kiddos will be glad that Marlon still comes out to do a scene-stealing encore, because while there are no such things as small parts and creating space for others is important, he clearly does belong center stage.”—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
