Discussion Questions:

1.      For years Beth has wanted to earn her pilot’s license, but she didn’t believe her dream was something she could pursue, for multiple reasons. Is there any dream you have put off because you didn’t feel as though you had the means or support to pursue it? If you were going to start trying to live that dream tomorrow, what is the first step you would take to achieve it?

2.      Beth’s dog, Grumps, has the personality of a cranky old man, and George’s cat, Jet, has a wild side. How do you think the first interaction between the two animals went? If you could choose one of these pets to have as your own, which would it be? Which is hotter: cat dad vs. dog dad?

3.      After going through an emergency landing with George, Beth realizes that she’s attracted to a man she never expected to even like. Do you think you’d keep a cool head in the same situation? Why do you think George’s competence during the emergency changed Beth’s
perspective?

4.      Shawn wants so badly to have an official meal named after him at Cornfields Diner only to be denied while The Bunsen is born. If you
could have a meal or special drink named after you, what would it be? At what restaurant would you like it served?

5.      Beth refers to the people at Cornfields as her diner family. How do you think her coworkers helped shape Beth into the woman she is? What purpose did this found family serve in her life? Do you have any found family in your life, and if so, where did you find them and how have they supported you?

6.      Beth and her mother have a frank discussion about the options Charlotte considered when she first discovered she was pregnant. If Charlotte had chosen to go through with an abortion as she originally planned, what do you think her life would have looked like in the following years? If Charlotte did not have the choice to get an abortion and was instead legally required to carry Beth to term, how do you think her feelings about the pregnancy and her relationship with Beth might have differed?

7.      The house that Beth, her moms, and Grumps live in requires a lot of fixing up, which means Beth has learned a whole host of new skills over the years. How would you feel about moving into a fixer-upper? How handy are you? What’s the last skill you learned by watching a YouTube video?

8.      Beth finds it fascinating that George is a pilot, but he is also scared of heights. How do you feel about flying? How do you feel about heights? Have you ever faced a fear head on? Did facing the fear make it worse or were you glad you challenged yourself?

9.      Though earning her private pilot’s license seemed daunting, by the end of the book Beth realizes that not only learning to fly but also having a career in aviation are achievable goals. Would you ever consider earning your private pilot’s license (if you haven’t already)? What do you think pilots love so much about flying? Why do you think Beth loved to fly?
