“Bioy invented situations, proposed an effect, and allowed the resulting epiphanies to be revealed in his writing.” – Abelardo Castillo
The fourteen tales in Fantastic Stories reveal Bioy Casares’s talent for blending fantasy, literary playfulness and everyday life. Among the intriguing premises he poses are the ability to stop time to extend the life of a terminally ill patient; the projection of a dead woman’s memory in the mind of her lover; and a pilot who discovers a series of aerial maneuvers for crossing into an alternate reality. Justly famous in the annals of Latin American literature, these selections are a festival of intelligence, imagination and masterful storytelling.
