READERS GUIDE
In order to provide reading groups with the most informed and thought-provoking questions possible, it is sometimes necessary to reveal certain aspects of the storyline. If you have not finished reading, you may want to do so before reviewing this guide.1. Describe the different comedic styles of each of the main characters. What does their sense of humor reveal or obscure about their personality?
2. What do you think makes comedy “good”? What makes a joke or a sketch successful?
3. Is there a particular comedian you found funniest? What is your favorite sketch from the show?
4. How is Lillian Martin depicted by the press? By her fellow castmates? By Madeline? Are any of these portrayals accurate?
5. What do you think motivates Gina, Lillian, and Brooke to join The Midnight Show? What drives them to pursue comedy in the first place?
6. At one point, Gina mentions that women in comedy are often relegated to certain archetypes. What kind of roles are available to the women on The Midnight Show? What about the men? Are they ever able to break free of those expectations?
7. Madeline notes that in the show’s opening era, it was accepted that “you can either show cleavage or talent, never both.” Do you think that’s true? How does the perception of a woman’s physical appearance impact her career?
8. How do the women in the show’s early days relate to one another? How do their relationships evolve as they continue working together? Are their relationships with one another different from their relationships with the men, or from the men’s relationships with one another?
9. The writers’ room of The Midnight Show is a tricky combination of competition and collaboration. How does the cast navigate this environment? Is it possible to be competitive without being cutthroat?
10. What generational differences do you observe between Madeline and the cast members she interviews, Gina in particular? Are there any points of similarity?
11. Journalist Madeline faces a moral and career dilemma at the end of the novel. Would you have made the same decision? Why or why not?
