It was forester Benton MacKaye’s idea to create the Appalachian Trail in 1921 to establish a beautiful hiking trail surrounded by nature that allowed city folks to reconnect with the environment around them. The trail was completed in 1937, and it has been beloved by hikers from all over the world ever since.
