“An owl restaurateur gets some unexpected competition from a double-crossing colleague… Sayegh’s digital collage art, which features an all-animal cast dressed like players in a golden-age gangster movie, sure is swell. Anyone familiar with gangster tropes should find this book terrific fun.” – Kirkus Reviews
“Ewers, making her debut, and Sayegh (the Proper Badger series) smuggle a lesson about kindness inside an unlikely wrapper: a classic gangster story. Owl Capone, dressed in a pinstriped suit and jaunty fedora, is a community pillar… Densely textured, digitally finished mixed-media collage echoes the hard-boiled text, paying loving tribute to The Godfather with winks that include a menu board that puns on gangster classics… the kind message at its heart is the real secret sauce.” – Publisher’s Weekly
“This Godfatherish tone, though, stands in comical contrast to the author’s rather sweet story… A glossary of gangster slang at the back adds to the cheery cognitive dissonance, as do Sayegh’s cartoon scenes of a notably diverse animal cast clad in Depression era garb slugging almond milk and chowing down on wraps with monikers like “The Goodfella” and “The Usual Suspects.” Here’s an offering readers… can’t refuse.” – Booklist
