Ho creates a sweet and silly tale for Halloween and year-round delight. . . . Each chapter is short with a limited number of sentences on each page and with art that explains the text well for practicing readers. The digital artwork is done in a limited yet colorful palette featuring Halloween hues in an adorable style that will spark reader interest in drawing their own vampire cats.

Just Halloween-y enough for emerging readers seeking a lightly eerie adventure. As in their first outing, Pumpkin and Beetle again make brave strides as they face a big challenge and take responsibility, while Ho’s friendly illustrations find ample opportunities for humor tangled up among the vines. . . . A silly, sweet story about meeting obstacles with aplomb.

Rendered in pastel jewel tones and conjuring Halloween vibes, the large cartoon illustrations use a variety of panel layouts, never exceeding four on a page. This ensures young readers can easily follow the story’s action and maintain focus on the simple speech-bubble text. The art itself charms rather than scares, including such cute details as ghoulberries, a gentle ghost cat, and helpful witches, setting a comforting tone for the duo’s mild mischief.
