The Road to Self

A transformative guide to healing inherited patterns, reclaiming your self, and becoming the person you never got to be

What if the reason you still feel stuck isn’t that you’re broken, but that the dynamics you absorbed in your family growing up are still shaping your adult life?

You may have read the books, gone to therapy, or even reduced or cut off contact with your family, yet still find yourself repeating the same painful cycles. If so, the problem may not be a lack of effort. It may be that the emotional conditioning you learned in your family still lives inside you.

In The Road to Self, Jerry Wise draws on more than forty-five years of experience in family systems to show you the path of self-differentiation: how to separate who you truly are from who your family shaped you to be.

This is not just another book about coping, diagnoses, or surface-level recovery. It is a guide to breaking free from the dysfunctional family conditioning at the root of your struggle and discovering how to live from a self that finally belongs to you.

You will learn to:

• recognize the family behaviors and beliefs still running your adult life;

• stop people-pleasing and managing everyone else’s emotions at your own expense;

• reduce the guilt, shame, and reactivity you grew up with;

• stay grounded when the people around you are anxious, reactive, or pulling you back into old family dynamics;

• step out of the family role you were cast in, whether you were the Fixer, the Scapegoat, the Golden Child, or something else;

• set boundaries that actually hold and fit the relationship you’re in;

• decide what level of contact protects yourself in each relationship; and

• build a grounded sense of self that does not depend on other people changing or giving you their approval.

Whether you call your family emotionally immature, dysfunctional, toxic, or narcissistic, or simply know that it shaped you in ways you are still trying to undo, The Road to Self offers more than insight. It gives you a path to lasting change and the freedom to become who you were meant to be.
