Introduction by Juan Mascaró, former professor at the University of Cambridge
The Dhammapada, regarded as the pinnacle of the Buddhist canon, consists of 423 verses in the Pali language, organized into twenty-six chapters. With a history spanning nearly 2,300 years, it holds a place of great importance both in the lives of Buddhist practitioners and in the broader realm of universal ethics. It advocates for a peaceful and nonviolent way of life, affirming that hostility cannot be overcome by hatred, but only through kindness.
Juan Mascaró’s version—considered a classic for decades and presented here in a Spanish translation by Carlos Manzano—is complemented by his insightful introduction, which brings readers closer to what is widely regarded as the foundational text of Buddhism. This elegant Spanish edition is presented alongside the original Pali text, offering a valuable resource for both scholars and general readers alike.
