Deep in the Alaskan wilderness, a remote community guards a deadly secret.
The search for missing young women leads U.S. Marshals Arliss Cutter and Lola Teariki to an isolated Alaskan island where bears outnumber people 3 to 1—but the most dangerous predators walk on two legs—in New York Times bestselling author and former U.S. Marshal Marc Cameron’s chilling new wilderness thriller for fans of Paul Doiron, CJ Box, Craig Johnson, and William Kent Krueger.
With missing persons officially outside the purview of Deputy U.S. Marshal Arliss Cutter and his partner Lola Teariki, Lola has set up a task force of their own. Anything to crack the disturbing cases of women who disappeared into an unknown hell and help the few who escaped it—branded, terrified, and hunted. When a Russian girl working tourist season in Juneau vanishes, the lead takes the Branded Task Force to Alaska’s ABC Islands, home to the largest density of brown bears in the world. But nine hundred pounds of tooth, claw, and fury have nothing on what Cutter and Lola are about to face.
In Southeast Alaska, the Hoffman family oversees a tiny village. They comprise its only law enforcement, run a remote fishing lodge and cabins, and welcome visitors with an unnervingly friendly smile. Cutter and Lola’s sense that something is off is confirmed when the few locals who dare to speak share rumors that the Hoffman’s lodge hides sinister secrets. To unearth them and save the missing women, Cutter and Lola must battle insidious smalltown corruption, agency rivalries, ravenous wilderness predators, and the most depraved human evil either of them has ever seen.
