“Brilliant and dark. A lively writing style that sticks with you right close to your heart, just like its ghosts,” —Juanpe Sánchez López.
“The book that made me cry the most in my entire life,” —Valeria Castro.
“Like a game, reading this story has also been like crossing a boundary between fear and affection. It’s been so simple, it’s been so difficult,” —Júlia Peró.
It all begins with a game: some nights, during those ten suspended minutes before Grandma returns from bingo, two sisters sneak out the back door to El Ahorcado—a volcano as round as an upturned belly—count to three, and run back without looking back. However, one night something changes… because once you’ve left behind the terrain of a violent childhood, how do you view the world?
Fifteen numbers appear on a bingo card—the same as the protagonist’s ages throughout the novel, present like a fly or a butterfly fluttering over the title of each chapter—and in those ten suspended minutes that a game lasts, anything is possible. They’ve Called “Bingo!” presents a family with a gift that is both inherited and a burden, and a story as rugged as the coarse volcanic rock of Lanzarote. With language that is playful and captivating, cruel and beautiful, Lana Corujo draws us into the silences and guilt, the festivals, the wounds, and the dark magic that can only be woven between two sisters who share a secret.
