PREMIO LUMEN 2026
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
2026 LUMEN PRIZE
“An ambitious novel that draws us into the unsettling investigation of a con artist in both his public and private lives. As documentary filmmaker Miranda K. tries to decipher her husband and follow the traces of his past, she begins to question the very nature of love. Isn’t every couple, in some way, a pact of fiction? What kind of woman are you when you’ve spent half your life with a liar?” —From the Jury’s Statement
“If someone asked me how I managed to spend fifteen years in love with the same man, I would say it was because I always knew there was a part of him I could never reach. That part was a locked door. Behind it was the secret.”
When France’s most admired journalist is accused of fabricating parts of the reports that made him famous, his fall is as spectacular as his rise. Prestigious awards, international recognition, a brilliant career: everything collapses overnight. But for Miranda, his wife, the real scandal is not the fraud. It is the abandonment.
As she tries to piece together what happened to Charles—the man she loved, admired, and perhaps never fully knew—Miranda sets out to make a documentary about Hélène and André, a couple who have been together for more than sixty years. She wants to understand what sustains love over time, what remains when passion, certainty, and the stories we tell ourselves begin to fade.
Through interviews, memories, family secrets, and the daily demands of raising her daughter Emma, Miranda undertakes an investigation that is both public and deeply personal. The more she uncovers about Charles’s lies, the more she is forced to revisit her own: the compromises, the idealizations, and the fictions that sustained her marriage.
Can love survive the truth? How much of what we call love is memory, how much is story, and how much is invention? Invented Love is an incisive and moving novel about the fragility of truth, the workings of memory, and the stories we build in order to keep living when everything we believed in falls apart.
