Come Look With Me Series : Titles in Order

Book 12
ASIAN ART is the twelfth book in the “Come Look With Me” series of art education and appreciation books for children. ASIAN ART highlights twelve masterpieces from South, East, and Southeast Asia, tracing artistic traditions through time and across cultures. From an 11th-century Indian sculpture of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, to the eye-popping “superflat” art of Japan’s Takashi Murakami in the 21st century, each piece of art is introduced with a full-page color reproduction. An accompanying page includes a brief biography of the artist, notes on the art form and its symbolism, and/or information about the time period. Questions designed to encourage thoughtful responses to each piece provide points for discussion to develop young readers’ greater understanding of art.
Book 11
Color reproductions of twelve masterpieces are accompanied by questions that encourage young readers to learn through visual exploration and interaction. Works from artists such as Diego Rivera (Mexico), Fernando Botero (Columbia), and Ramón Fradé (Puerto Rico) are included.

Book 10
COME LOOK WITH ME: DISCOVERING WOMEN ARTISTS FOR CHILDREN introduces children to twelve magnificent works of art. Children will share the excitement of Sofonisba Anguissola and her sisters; and feel their determination as they play in “The Chess Player.” They will relax with Mary Cassatt in “The Tea Party,” looking at how women lived, and ask questions about the roles women take. Children will also have fun examining their own faces and dress with Frieda Kahlo’s “Self Portrait With Monkey.”

In this study of women artists, children will become familiar with painters who are often forgotten in art history books because of their gender. All these works are striking images, created by women who would not let society’s gender biases deter their love of art and their creativity, and who, today, can be accepted as equals. From the medieval realism in Artemesia Gentileschi’s “Lute Player,” to the Impressionism of Berthe Morisot’s “The Coiffure,” children can explore what differences there are in a woman’s way of painting and what they see. They can end up softly with Grandma Moses’ “Sugaring Off,” or they can tease out the story in Faith Ringgold’s “Love in the School Yard.”

COME LOOK WITH ME: DISCOVERING AFRICAN AMERICAN ART FOR CHILDREN introduces children to twelve magnificent works of art. The artwork presented in this book is a small representation of a very remarkable effort by African Americans in the United States during the twentieth century to portray our developing self-image as citizens who have shaped not only ourselves, but have helped to develop the shape and color of all of our aspirations.

The author, Dr. James Haywood Rolling, Jr., leads this visual exploration and interaction.
