Excellent Coming-of-Age Novels for Tween Girls

12-year-old Luna and her best friend, Scoot, combine their talents to create zines (small booklets) for their classmates. Luna’s words and Scoot’s artwork create a new reality for many struggling middle schoolers by offering solutions to perplexing tween problems (everything from period puffiness to strange parental advice). This quirky story blends laughter with emotional depth, making it a meaningful read for young readers who enjoy character‑driven tales and feel a little outside the norm.

Opal’s mother left long ago, and Opal desperately wants to know 10 things about her. If only she could pry the information from her aloof father. At the grocery store, Opal finds a stray dog, takes it home, and convinces her father to let her keep it. With Winn-Dixie (her dog) in tow, Opal meets and befriends several people in her small Southern town. As she learns why adults make the choices they do, Opal also finds the good within her newfound, flawed community and works to build connections with everyone she encounters. This award-winning book works well as a classroom read-aloud for 4th- to 6th-grade students and also has a movie adaptation.

While staying with her uncle for the summer, Gwen MacKinnon discovers that the town library is named after her, and inside, even more surprises await. Black-and-white illustrations nod to the real Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and make this an ideal read for tweens who enjoy fantasy with a splash of realism.

Despite not reading this for the first time until I was 45, the powerful story caught in my heart and throat numerous times.

Lola’s journey takes her to the magical kingdom of Floresta, filled with zip-lining, magical stones, and shape-shifting. Finally, Lola must appeal to Floresta’s young queen, Madre Luci, and ask her to create an antidote for both the tree and Alex. When Lola returns home, she discovers that while the tree has healed, Alex’s condition has worsened. This tale with a twist is a breathtaking story about mental health, family, regret, and coming to terms with loss.

Orphaned Anne has lived in many places before she arrives at Marilla and Mathew’s home (Green Gables) on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Anne’s lively imagination and temperament get the better of her on numerous occasions, such as when she insults a gossipy neighbor, dyes her hair green, smashes a slate over a schoolmate’s head, and accidentally gets her best friend drunk. Determined to stay at Green Gables, Anne puts her best foot forward and manages to win over the hearts of everyone she encounters. Published over 100 years ago, Anne has been translated into nearly every language, adapted into film and a graphic novel, and has inspired generations of young girls. One might argue that the entire series is the original coming-of-age novel for tween girls.
