Excellent Coming-of-Age Novels for Tween Girls

by Miranda Rosbach

Judy Blume and Lois Lowry might be the most prominent literary queens when it comes to groundbreaking coming-of-age novels. No doubt you’ve heard of or read The Giver or Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. These gold standard books were revolutionary for their time. Luckily, we have a range of new coming-of-age books for today’s young tweens; stories that help girls to feel connected to characters facing circumstances similar to their own reality. These characters ask embarrassing questions about normal tween growth and have life-changing experiences along the way. Want to feel more connected to your tween? Take turns reading one of these books together!

    The Moth Keeper

    by K. O'Neill

Anya, a newly appointed Moth Keeper, is entrusted with the task of guarding the moths (letting them out at night and returning them at the first sign of daylight), so that when the time comes, they can pollinate the Night-Flower tree. Unfortunately, the job is lonelier than she thought, and when she glimpses the joyful people of the sun-village, she wonders whether or not to leave her job behind and live under the sun’s bright rays. As the sun penetrates Anya’s thoughts, she becomes distracted and loses the moths. To save the winged creatures she swore to protect, Anya teams up with a wistful spirit, Lioka. Lavish illustrations and themes of belonging and identity make this graphic novel a must-read.

    The Moon Without Stars

    by Chanel Miller

12-year-old Luna and her best friend, Scoot, combine their talents to create zines (small booklets) for their classmates. Luna’s words and Scoot’s artwork create a new reality for many struggling middle schoolers by offering solutions to perplexing tween problems (everything from period puffiness to strange parental advice). However, when Luna starts her period, everything changes. Seemingly overnight, Luna’s friend circle shifts, and she finds herself ensconced with a popular crowd of girls that point out the flaws of their classmates as a noble pursuit. If you read only one book on this list, make sure it’s this one! Best for ages 10 and up.

Note: brief mentions of bulimia, rape, cutting, and masturbation.

    Hattie Mae Begins Again

    by Sharon G. Flake

In 1938, Hattie Mae leaves North Carolina for a new life in Pennsylvania, eager to attend her cousin Abigail’s school for girls. However, unlike her classmates, she comes from a working-class family and is forbidden to reveal her relation to Abigail. Hattie soon makes friends and attracts the attention of Lisa, the school bully. The tensions lead to a stolen necklace and Hattie trespassing into Lisa’s room, putting herself at risk of expulsion. As tensions ease, Hattie forms a club called Hattie’s Helpers — a volunteer committee that saves the school after the newspapers discover Hattie’s true relationship to Abigail. Rich in Philadelphia Black history (drawn from the author’s background), this novel explores classism, advocacy, friendship, and finding one’s calling.

    Because of Winn-Dixie

    by Kate DiCamillo

Opal’s mother left long ago, and Opal desperately wants to know 10 things about her. If only she could pry the information from her aloof father. At the grocery store, Opal finds a stray dog, takes it home, and convinces her father to let her keep it. With Winn-Dixie (her dog) in tow, Opal meets and befriends several people in her small Southern town. As she learns why adults make the choices they do, Opal also finds the good within her newfound, flawed community and works to build connections with everyone she encounters. This award-winning book works well as a classroom read-aloud for 4th- to 6th-grade students and also has a movie adaptation.

    The Library of Unruly Treasures

    by Jeanne Birdsall

While staying with her uncle for the summer, Gwen MacKinnon discovers that the town library is named after her, and inside, even more surprises await. A clan of small, fairy-like creatures, the Ladukan, live inside the library and need Gwen’s help to find a new home. They appoint Gwen as their Qalba (protector), and she is soon swept into an adventure involving stolen artwork, lost Ladukan, and finding her way back home. Black-and-white illustrations nod to the real Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and make this an ideal read for tweens who enjoy fantasy with a splash of realism.

Yumi attends the most privileged school in the area, but her real love is stand-up comedy. She practices her routine, knowing she’ll never be allowed to become a comedian because of her strict, no-nonsense parents. When Yumi finds a comedy camp by accident and is mistaken for another student, she doesn’t correct the lie until the secret snowballs out of control. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

    by Mildred D. Taylor

Nine-year-old Cassie Logan lives with her family in a modest home on 400 acres of land that her grandfather purchased after the Civil War. Cassie knows her life as a young Black girl is different than those of her White counterparts, especially since she and her siblings start school later and walk several miles instead of riding a bus. Throughout the story, Cassie’s family experiences prejudice, mistreatment, and harassment from a man who wants to buy their land. When boycotting the local store doesn’t yield better treatment, the Logans must make some difficult decisions. Replete with themes of racism, Cassie’s coming-of-age story is rooted in a bleak period of American history. Despite not reading this for the first time until I was 45, the powerful story caught in my heart and throat numerous times.

    by Karla Arenas Valenti

Lola’s brother, Alex, unexpectedly falls ill. When his ashen spots begin to spread (just like the spots on the courtyard tree outside), Lola takes on the burden of finding a remedy. Lola’s journey takes her to the magical kingdom of Floresta, filled with zip-lining, magical stones, and shape-shifting. Finally, Lola must appeal to Floresta’s young queen, Madre Luci, and ask her to create an antidote for both the tree and Alex. When Lola returns home, she discovers that while the tree has healed, Alex’s condition has worsened. This tale with a twist is a breathtaking story about mental health, family, regret, and coming to terms with loss.

    Anne of Green Gables

    by L. M. Montgomery

Orphaned Anne has lived in many places before she arrives at Marilla and Mathew’s home (Green Gables) on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Anne’s lively imagination and temperament get the better of her on numerous occasions, such as when she insults a gossipy neighbor, dyes her hair green, smashes a slate over a schoolmate’s head, and accidentally gets her best friend drunk. Determined to stay at Green Gables, Anne puts her best foot forward and manages to win over the hearts of everyone she encounters. Published over 100 years ago, Anne has been translated into nearly every language, adapted into film and a graphic novel, and has inspired generations of young girls. One might argue that the entire series is the original coming-of-age novel for tween girls.
