The nine tales of Ninetails begins with a Lucille Clifton poem where women step “without fear or guilt or shame safe through generous fields.” That is the fairytale each of the stories in this collection longs for. This is a great read for anyone who wants their folklores to feel more supernatural than merely superstitious. It’s also great if you just love foxes.

They Called Us Exceptional
by Prachi Gupta
This was one of the most honest memoirs I read last year. At times it read like a journal or love letter, not just to Gupta’s immediate family, but to anyone who has experienced complicated feelings of loss and freedom that can occur when removing yourself from a toxic family dynamic.

The Great Reclamation
by Rachel Heng
This was easily the fastest I’ve ever read a 464-page book. It’s a historical fiction, love and loss story that’s loosely based on Stendhal’s The Red and the Black (another book about self-ambition and love). Beginning right before Japan’s occupation of Singapore during World War II, the novel spans decades, but never feels convoluted.
