Staff Picks: Ana Murphy’s Favorites
Hi there! My name is Ana, and I am the photographer at Out of Print. I grew up in Mexico City and I’m currently living in Brooklyn with my spouse, our dog and quite a bit of plants and books! (Working at PRH has definitely made my TBR stack bigger). I can get into reading slumps or get distracted by the TV quite easily, but some of my favorite reads are either emotionally driven stories or suspenseful “edge of your seat” novels. I am very passionate about diversity and inclusion, especially when it comes to telling stories, whether it’s in photography, TV shows, movies, or books. This is a heart wrenching book, and one that I have loved for a long time. It took me to Afghanistan and made me watch the women’s stories and lives from the sidelines. It broke my heart in more than one way, but it also made me feel love for these characters long after I had finished the book. *Warning that it might be triggering for some.

Mexican Gothic
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
It took me out of a big reading slump—I could not put this book down. It is eerie, suspenseful and it left me thinking a lot about what was incorporated into the plot after I was done reading. Plus, it was a very different Mexican story than the one we are used to. It featured a strong, fearless female character, and it gave an insight to a different version of Mexican people—fashionable and city folks—something that has gotten lost in the stories that are told about us.

Daisy Jones & The Six: Reese’s Book Club
by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I’d never read a book in this format before, and it made me feel like I was watching the interviews instead of reading them, which honestly blew my mind at times. I kept forgetting this was a work of fiction, and I ended up yearning for the stories and the band to be true. (After I finished reading it, I listened to the audiobook version and it was another incredible way to experience the story!)

This one is so close to my heart. The first time I read it was as a teenager and it fueled my love for books back then. It has a story within a story, mystery, friendship and love. And even after all these years, it still manages to captivate me.
