Listen … we all have problematic faves. This essay collection is about immensely talented artists who have done horrible deeds. The book discusses much more than just “separating artists from their art.” Dederer examines the artist-as-monster idea from a plethora of angles, from the ethics of creating art about awful things (like Nabokov’s Lolita) to the ahistoricism in absolving long-gone artists of their prejudices because of the times in which they lived. Fascinating all around!

A Swim in a Pond in the Rain
by George Saunders
In this book, George Saunders compiled a collection of Russian short stories from masters like Chekhov and Tolstoy, accompanied by his analyses and explanations of how the stories … well, tell a story. This should be required reading for any aspiring writer, but it also taught me how to read with a keener eye and made me less intimidated by Russian literature.

The Nineties
by Chuck Klosterman
This book is what it sounds like: A history of the 1990s. It felt a little sacrilegious to loudly label myself as a ’90s baby when I was only there for a couple of months and knew nothing about the decade. Now, I feel like an expert. Klosterman manages to fit 10 years of music, film, TV, sports, politics, and more into one book; one that isn’t just miraculously coherent, but also absolutely captivating.
