It’s sapphic, it’s heart-wrenching, it’s beautiful, and it made me love historical fiction. Before I picked this up, I would have told you it was my least favorite genre, but this book changed my mind. And it’s because of the representation in this story that history all too often leaves out—queer people have always existed, and they deserve to be portrayed and celebrated everywhere. This book is AMAZING!

Krystal Sutherland is an auto-buy author for me. I love Our Chemical Hearts and House of Hollow but THIS one is my favorite. This book has everything – a complex family dynamic, a curse, a mystery and flashbacks from Death itself, friendship, romance, and beautiful representation of mental illness and all its complexities. As she watches her family become consumed by their fears, Esther starts facing her own. It’s SO GOOD.

Just Mercy (Movie Tie-In Edition, Adapted for Young Adults)
by Bryan Stevenson
I love this YA adaptation of Just Mercy and have been recommending it a lot—especially to those who want to read more nonfiction and struggle with how daunting some of those adult titles can be. The work Bryan Stevenson does is incredible, and this story is eye-opening and heartbreaking, but it’s also inspiring.
