This book is one that I recommend to everyone, whether you are a fantasy reader or not! This standalone fantasy novel has a dark academia setting and a flawed — yet relatable — main character who is on a mission to become the first female Highmage in Tiran’s Magistry. Blood Over Bright Haven reaches across genres with hard hitting themes like how to make changes in a broken, patriarchal system, colonialism, and the ethical costs of progress. This book had me on the edge of my seat and the ending is one that I still think about frequently.

The way Emily St. John Mandel writes about humanity is full of hope and a great reminder of human resilience. Sea of Tranquility is a great addition to Emily St. John Mandel’s universe and I highly recommend it!
