by Donald Ray Pollock
Be warned, stranger … there be dragons here. This novel, with notes of Flannery O’Connor’s best, is a BLEAK descent into the worst humanity has to offer, and yet, somehow, the journey never feels oppressive. The ways the multiple storylines weave in and out of one another are not only impressive but extremely satisfying in the end, and a true achievement in the Southern Gothic genre.

Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day
by Ben Loory
Ray Bradbury recommended this book and if that’s not enough to get you on board, I’m not sure anything I say will change that. Still, I adore the stories in this collection and I love the simplistic style author Ben Loory utilizes in crafting these modern-day fables. Whether it’s a duck falling in love with a rock, a moose and parachuter’s friendship challenging the status quo, or a shark terrorizing a man’s mind in a swimming pool, these quirky, occasionally dark, and eclectic stories never cease to leave you changed by the end. Highly recommend.

The Ruins
by Scott Smith
Can plants be scary? This was not a question I found myself wondering often in the past, but I am very pleased to report that The Ruins answers it with a resounding YES. The villains of this book are some of the best and most creative “monsters” I’ve read in a long time and the creativity Scott Smith uses with the environment and vegetation to enact horror on our main cast of vacationers is truly terrifying and brutal. This is lean and mean horror that never outstays its welcome and is strong evidence that we need more Scott Smith novels in the world.
