Staff Picks: Viviana Moreno’s Favorites

Although meant for teen and young readers, I think this is one of those stories that we should all add to our lists. On the surface, this is a queer teenage romance story, but it is also so much more as you begin to peel back all its layers – taking on everything from societal expectations, culture, family, and more. It’s beautiful to read about the main character, Lily Hu, as she begins to discover parts of herself and develop that piece of her identity with Kathleen Miller, whom she falls in love with. The 1954 setting is important in understanding the nuances of the book, when Red-Scare paranoia ran rampant and queer relationships were only visible in hushed corners and secret bars. It’s a painful story, but it is a testament to love and risk and choosing to accept yourself. It’s not a fairytale story, but it is real and so very important.

A funny disclaimer! Just because I’m currently Gabriela’s publicist, doesn’t mean that’s why I added her to my recommendation list. It’s just that good! Gabriela is a powerhouse individual, author, and witch. She inspires me daily with her confidence, warm aura, and informative books. This book in particular came to me at a time when I needed some reassurance, empowerment, and inspiration — and it did all that and more. Gabriela’s prose is conversational but packed with knowledge and insight, and it felt like a friend speaking to me the entire time I was reading it. This book helped me feel more capable and in control of myself, which I think we could all use a dose of sometimes. Life can feel unpredictable and unwieldy, but Gabriela reminds us of the magic and power we hold within ourselves – she just helps coax it out and empower you from the inside out.
