    by Anne Tyler

Gail Baines loses her job – or quits, depending on whom you ask. Tomorrow, her daughter, Debbie, is getting married. And Gail hasn’t even been invited to the spa day organized by the mother of the groom. Then, Gail’s ex-husband, Max, arrives unannounced, carrying a cat, without a place to stay or even a suit. True crisis lands when Debbie shares with her parents a secret she just learned about her husband-to-be. A secret so big, it throws the entire wedding into question, but also stirs up emotions and memories from Gail and Max’s past. by Anne Tyler

The Garretts took their first and last family vacation in the summer of 1959. They rarely leave home, but in some ways, they have never been farther apart. Mercy aspires to be a painter, which means less time keeping house for her husband, Robin. Their teenage daughters, Alice and Lily, could not have less in common. And, their youngest, David, is already determined to leave his family’s orbit, for reasons none of them understand. Their lives advance across decades, and the Garretts’ influence on one another ripples unmistakably through each generation. Heartbreaking and hilarious, this story illuminates the kindnesses and cruelties of our daily lives and the impossibility of breaking free from those who love us.

Micah Mortimer is a self-employed tech expert, superintendent of his apartment building, and cautious to a fault behind the steering wheel. He seems content with leading a steady, circumscribed life. That is until one day his routines are blown apart when his woman friend (he refuses to call anyone in her late thirties a “girlfriend”) tells him she’s facing eviction and a teenager shows up on his doorstep claiming to be his son. These surprises throw Micah’s meticulously organized life off-kilter, and risk changing him forever. This novel is a funny and joyful story about seeing the world through new eyes.

    A Spool of Blue Thread

    by Anne Tyler

Nominated for the Man Booker Prize, A Spool of Blue Thread follows the lives of four generations of the Whitshank family. “It was a beautiful, breezy, yellow-and-green afternoon …” This is how Abby Whitshank always describes the day she fell in love with Red in July 1959. From Red’s parents, newly arrived in Baltimore in the 1920s, to the grandchildren carrying the Whitshank legacy into the twenty-first century, the Whitshanks radiate an indefinable kind of specialness, but like all families, their stories reveal only part of the picture: Abby and Red and their four grown children have accumulated not only tender moments, and laughter, but also jealousies, disappointments, and carefully guarded secrets.

    Searching for Caleb

    by Anne Tyler

Through generations, the Pecks have maintained a determined steadiness. Adamantly middle class and Peck-proud – as the family slogan goes – they are quick to sweep under the rug those members who do not live up to their standards. Maybe that’s why Caleb Peck disappeared with his violoncello as a boy? Sixty years later, his brother Daniel starts looking for answers. He turns to his daughter-in-law, Justine, another Peck family eccentric for help. A studied tarot card reader, Justine continues to find the same message in the cards: Change is coming. An unlikely pair struggle against a stifling family, but Daniel and Justine believe they’ll find freedom in just the right mix of magic, music, and mystery.

    The Tin Can Tree

    by Anne Tyler

In the small town of Larksville, the Pikes have chosen to stand still, hiding from an unnameable past. Mrs. Pike seldom speaks, while Mr. Pike maintains a forced stoicism. Only their ten-year-old son, Simon, seems to acknowledge the world has changed, he just doesn’t understand why. The strange shroud over their home cannot be contained and soon starts to inch its way toward their neighbors. Brothers, Ansel and James will have to confront their own dark secrets if they have any hope to bring the neighborhood back into the light.
